Some people like to call me a technical guru, but that wasn’t always the case. Before I took a degree in statistics and mathematics with the Open University, I was a navigating officer in the merchant navy.
My professional experience is extensive and varied. Prior to my interest in using data and statistical analysis for marketing, I worked in clinical research and investigated the relationship between cancer clusters and nuclear power stations. I once wrote a program that could be used to decode poly-alphabetic ciphers which was used by the mathematics department at Oxford University.
My first foray into marketing was as the Senior Statistician at Brann, where I was a key member of the marketing information consultancy which brought marketing and analysis together in a form that was understandable by all marketers. I set up Tangible Data with Nigel in 1996, and am responsible for the technical development of data solutions, as well as developing marketing models and writing software.
I am also involved with the industry in which we operate. As well as being a fellow of the Royal Statistical Society, I enjoy writing and teaching a number of statistical courses, and am often invited to speak at conferences; especially in complex areas such as multivariate analysis, prospect scoring and predictive modelling.
